Between Miss Polly Rae’s Sheets

The Hippodrome Casino is definitely not the Casino de Monte Carlo; nor is it, somehow, the most felicitous venue for a burlesque revue. Its over-long and shallow stage and its general Holiday Inn atmosphere did nothing to help this show, despite forays among the tables by the performers.

Maybe we weren’t such a wonderful audience that night, either. It happens. But it must be said that there were some great burlesquers and sharp acts that lifted it all up and put Miss Polly Rae back on her well-deserved pedestal.

One of these was The Trolly Dollies, a cabin crew routine which made those collective Virgin ads look like a warm-up number. It was brilliant, and not just because it had zippy choreo and maybe the best merkins that you’ll see this season, but because it was funny and smart and, for once, the space seemed to fit the act.

Miss Polly Rae presents The Soho Burlesque Club which, in turn, presents Between The Sheets at The Hippodrome Casino, Cranbourn Street, Leicester Square, WC2H 7JH London; Wednesdays, 8.30 pm, Tickets £10, £15, £25, £30
